Acidosis or Alkalosis?

The human body comprises of 70% water and in its attempt to balance positive ions (acidic) and negative ions (alkaline) is compromised by poor diet and lack of exercise thus creating problems that may go unnoticed for years.

In general when our body acid level is averaging high peaks than low, then this can have an adverse affect on our health and immune system.

If it’s consistently high, then this can lead to a condition known as Acidosis which can be a serious and life threatening condition.

It’s been well documented that ‘western diets’ are far too high in acid-producing animal products like meat, eggs, and dairy products.

Conversely our diets are far too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. We consume too many acid-producing processed foods like white flour,sugar, coffee,soft drinks and artificial sweeteners.

Even some of the drugs we use are acid forming!

Obesity.

A constantly over acidic body contributes to the destruction of cells and can make you fat.

Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is created by obesity, poor nutrition, high stress and the lack of pHysical inactivity.

All of these conditions are related to high acidity. Our over-acid lifestyles and food choices negatively impact our health, which is shown by the rapid increase of diabetes across the globe.

Obesity is not the cause of diabetes.

Diabetes is brought about by our increased consumption of complex carbohydrates and simple sugars and lack of exercise.

Osteoporosis.

Bone density is affected by an over acidic body. When the body uses the calcium in your bones to combat the over acidity, your bone density is gradually weakened making you more susceptible to osteoporosis.

So why all the interest around pH balance, acidosis, diet and exercise?

You’ve probably gathered by now that it has been proven conclusively that most of our aches, pains, illnesses, diseases are all directly related to the levels of acidity in our body.

A major contributory factor in becoming acidic is that there are never enough hours in the day to take “time out” to eat a well balanced meal and take regular exercise.

This is substantiated by the increased cases of diabetes and obesity over the past decade, indicative of our poorly controlled eating habits.

Why is exercise so important?

Well the lungs are the major player here! By exerting the body and thereby increasing your lung capacity and intake you are flushing out acid every time you exhale carbon dioxide (CO2) which can lower you acidic levels literally within minutes.

The kidneys though, are another matter excreting acids through urine, but this process of excretion takes days, unlike the lungs which as already mentioned, can take minutes even seconds.

Why is diet important?

Simply put, there are alkaline foods and there are acidic foods.

So, by maintaining a healthy balanced diet of non acidic foods we ensure our pH balance remains constant.

Monitoring your pH levels?

Depending on how seriously you are about your health and well-being, monitoring your pH balance will determine what steps to take to should your body be too acidic.

One very simple way is to test your urine as soon as you awake which is generally accepted as the most accurate simply because no food has been eaten and therefore cannot influence any testing.

This is done by using pH strips with which you would sample with.

So what is the solution to controlling our body’s acidity levels?

We can control our pH levels in 2 ways:

1…Take regular exercise but be consistent.

Try a walk after lunch instead of hanging about in the office or a stroll after an evening meal.

Make subtle changes but remain consistent.
